The practice of IH is inherent in many third-party government and private industry best practice standards; however, the same skills can be utilized for various projects, including proprietary research of various kinds. 

Our initial phone assessment will outline the best method to determine the likely scope of service required.  We may perform qualitative and/or quantitative analysis of an exposure.  Sometimes we can make calculations so that no visit is needed, based on the written scenarios presented to us.  Other times only an on-site observation followed by a quantitative measurement is appropriate to estimate exposure normally thru sampling the air, surface, or even part of the body such as hair, skin, breath, or in some cases urine, blood or other body fluids.

When applicable, the purpose of industrial hygiene sampling is to estimate worker exposure, determine compliance with State and federal regulations, determine the efficacy of exposure controls measures, and to characterize contaminant emissions. It is meant to be one tool in the overall practice of risk management. The inherent limitations and usefulness of these findings are based on sources of information used in a very specific period of time. 

Practitioners are certified by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene which has rigorous requirements that normally take about 7 years to complete, including a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a hard science, four years of documented working under a certified “mentor” a strong ethical reputation and a rigorous examination with a low pass-rate.  Recertification is required every five years. 

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (The “Act”) requires nearly every employer to implement the elements of an industrial hygiene and safety, occupational health, or hazard communication program and to be responsive to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Act and its regulations.  This can be simple or very complex.  We review all this with you so it’s easy to understand and you have peace of mind regarding both compliance and with the risk of health hazards that can lead to costly illness, fines, workers compensation and insurance costs.
